Music does indeed bring me happiness in several ways.

I love to dance and I can feel the rhythm of the music in my body. Moving with the music is fun and it also brings a smile to my face.

I enjoy singing. I usually sing along with songs that have words which resonate with me. They are a reflection of my view on life. So the singing becomes an affirmation of what is important to me.

I listen to inspirational music, especially when I am going through a tough time. The music, the words, the message permeate every aspect of my being. When I use music in this way, I actually consider it to be a form of spiritual practice, because it heals my mind and my heart.

And then I listen to meditative music. It calms my mind, relaxes my body, and brings peace to my soul.

I listened to the segments you sent in your e mail and waited to respond after I heard the NYPhilharmonic play the whole piece on sunday night. Your question is complex - Yes art and religion give meaning to tragedies in life. Whether an icon of the Resurrection or the Mahler Resurrection music - you are elevated and transfigured by the subject in an icon or the music. Mahler's work soars to the high heavens lifting you with it. The same can happen in art - you can be taken out of mundane surroundings and taken into a transfigured world. (could elaborate more)...

Lynne and Josh:
Thanks for the refreshing piece on the ukelele---reminded me of my first trip to Hawaii; I purchased a small "plastic" ukeleli for my young grandson to remember the trip. We had more fun making up songs and just enjoying the sound; now my grandson is going on 8 yrs of age and has been taking private guitar lessons.

Thanks for this. I came to this post through a Google search for the words "transcendent performance music." My daughter showed me, earlier tonight, a TED talk by Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love, which had some great insights into the ancient world's view of the "daemon" and "genius" behind art and creation vs. our modern ego-based view of artists that seems so destructive of and to them. Ms. Gilbert spoke about a dancer's transcendent performance (http://dsf.chesco.org/aging/lib/aging/pdf/directory_of_continuing_care_retirement_communities.pdf). This got me thinking about Paul Gonsalves and Duke Ellington in Newport in 1956 *(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vnrNWyvI-U&feature=fvsr). Hence, my google search.
Both the Casals and Ma performances were transcendent. Thank you. I was struck more by the unity of their performances than their differences. The expression of longing, sorrow, depth, and dignity, written down on paper by a man living in Germany in the 17th and 18th century, brought to life in the 20th century by a Catalan, interpreted again in the 21st century by a man born in China. We really are born with open-loop limbic systems. We are amazing creatures.

Hi, I'm working on a story for a new website called YouBeauty (you can see my credentials at my website, I was a reporter at Newsweek for many years). I'm looking for any citations you can give me on
How does music affect your mental health?
We'd like to break it up by category: music for happiness, music to prep for sleep, music for energy boost, etc.
I've been asked to describe each type of music, what it does to the brain, and then give examples of songs/compositions
I would be happy to quote you and cite your blog.
It's easiest to write me at temmae@gmail.com, or if you tell me where to call, that would be great. My phone number today is 212-316-1840. Thank you, Temma

Hi, just found your website as I am just preparing a presentation for my 4th year university level course on Positive Psychology . (the impact of music on well-being.) I will be exploring your site in detail when I can, it looks amazing and I would also love to participate in your study (I am over 50 and music has just recently become an integral part of my own life)
For the immediate moment however, could you kindly send the self-help tips re: music/mindfulness practice that you offered at a recent workshop?
Thank you,
Susan Currie (Winfield, BC, Canada)
